PHILIPSBURG--Theo Heyliger is facing having to pay potential compensation in the millions after an interim verdict from the Court of First Instance on Tuesday, which confirmed a 2023 ruling that held the former infrastructure minister liable for sabotaging a large real estate company’s development of a shopping and entertainment centre at the cruise port more than a decade ago.

MARIGOT/PARIS--Senator for Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, Annick Pétrus, has confessed she did attempt to carry cartons of undeclared cigarettes in her luggage after she was stopped by customs officers on arrival at Paris Roissy airport on May 4, and subsequently regretted her mistake in a communiqué.

SIMPSON BAY--The Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI has initiated emergency clean-up operations in response to an alarming surge of sargassum seaweed washing up along St. Maarten’s coastline. Works began over the weekend of May 24-25 in the hardest-hit areas: Simpson Bay, Beacon Hill, and Oyster Pond.

PHILIPSBURG--The Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) will be conducting a review to assess the economic and social impact of the recently-concluded Soul Beach Music Festival, which made a highly anticipated return to St. Maarten after years of absence.
