More than a dozen community gathered at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, June 7, to learn about gravestone cleaning and restoration. The presenter was Kurt Jordan (aka KC Cemetery Man), a local expert who offers clinics to area cemeteries.
Jordan’s website explains he became interested in cemetery work when he was asked by his father several years ago to help repair the grave marker for his great-great-grandfather at the Greenwick Cemetery in Andrew County, Missouri.
Since that time, he has invested hours of his time in training on the proper methods of repair and cleaning. His expertise is clearly in demand as he often speaks at local libraries and historic preservation groups.
He estimates he has recovered, restored, and cleaned hundreds of monuments in the greater Kansas City area and is happy to do so free of charge. Jordan serves on the board of directors for Missouri Preservation.
“Laurel Hill is among the prettiest of cemeteries,” he said. “The view of the bluff is incredible, and the grounds are obviously well maintained.”
His instruction to the group included an onition to be very cautious when touching any grave marker. Even those that appear sturdy could be a risk to disfigure, break, or fall over completely.
Well-intentioned efforts to clean a headstone of any material could result in permanent damage so efforts should only occur during organized, trained events.

The Laurel Hill Cemetery Board, led by Paul Norman, intends to purchase cleaning kits to have available for trained volunteers to use at cemetery clean up days. For more information, find Laurel Hill Cemetery Weston MO on Facebook or Mr. Norman at 816-640-2909.
