<p><strong>MAP Planning Forum</strong></p><p>The <a href="https://map-forum-njtpa.hub.arcgis.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Metropolitan Area Planning (MAP) Forum</a> has their 2025 Spring Meeting on Friday, June 6th at 1 pm. The MAP is a group of planning organizations in NY, NJ, PA, and CT, which includes <a href="https://westcog.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Western Connecticut Council of Governments</a>, of which Bethel is a member. The goal is to communicate and coordinate transportation planning in the Northeast Megaregion. There will be a machine referendum on Thursday, June 12th from 6 am to 8 pm at your normal polling location. The $1.2 million project will be paid for through a loan at 2% over 20 years, reduced by available grants. The project is eligible for an EPA grant of up to $640,000 and potentially a subsidy through the state of Connecticut. Payment for the appropriated sums shall be paid by the water s of the Bethel PUC. They checked in on the BHS HVAC upgrade project, and three buildings where future projects are being considered, including the Highway Garage roof replacement, replacement of the town’s animal shelter, and the upgrade of the locker room facilities in Town Hall. The PS & BC aids and advises the Board of Selectmen in studying the building needs of the Town and consolidates the design and construction of all public buildings. Someone with electrical and lighting experience would be very helpful on the current board, but other experience is also considered.</p><p><strong>Legislative Session</strong></p><p>Senate Bill 6, An Act Concerning Resources and s for Infants, Toddlers, and Disconnected Youths, has ed the State Senate. In the bill there is a section that requires municipal youth camps to obtain a state license and follow costly state mandates. This will likely result in significant increases in our summer program costs. The controversial aspects of the bill all relate to state mandates that limit our Planning and Zoning Commission’s input on affordable housing development and deprioritizes Bethel for state funding unless we comply. Neither of our State Representatives ed the bill in the house.</p><p>The Legislative Session ends Wednesday night. The parade travels along the sidewalk south along Durant Ave., east along Greenwood Ave, north on PT Barnum Sq., and west on School Street where it ends in front of Town Hall. <p><strong>EV Chargers</strong></p><p>The Board of Selectmen voted to move forward with a project to replace the EV charging stations in the lot next to Varano Bakery and at the train station. The project would also include new chargers at Town Hall, Bethel High School, and the library. The project primarily funded through energy rebates through Eversource and chargers provided by <a href="https://qiontech.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">QiOn</a>, who has their R&D operation right here in Bethel.</p><p><strong>SCADA Town Meeting</strong></p><p>The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance have approved the recommendation of the Public Utilities Commission for the Water System Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) upgrade project. The funding for the project will come from grants and low interest loans that are repaid by Bethel water customers.</p><p><strong>P&Z Affordable Housing</strong></p><p>Planning and Zoning has continued public hearings for 53 Taylor Rd. (8-30g affordable housing 20 units) and 72 Reservoir Rd. (8-30g affordable housing 6 units) on Tuesday, May 27th at 7 pm in Town Hall Meeting Room D. The commission will also be discussing possible changes to TOD boundaries and an 8-30g project at 48/50 Nashville Road. Bob and Ali from Community Shellfish as they talk about the history of oysters and oystering in lower Fairfield County. They will also share their experience working with local oyster farmers in Maine, a demonstration of how to correctly shuck an oyster, and sample! <p>To conclude our Nurses Week celebrations, the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) team was honored at Danbury City Hall on Tuesday, May 20th. Mayor Roberto Alves presented each nurse with a citation recognizing their “outstanding service and unwavering dedication” as part of the NFP program in Danbury.</p><p>In his remarks, Mayor Alves highlighted how the work of NFP nurses “not only improves lives, but also builds stronger, healthier futures for parents and children alike.”</p><p>RVNAhealth President and CEO Theresa Santoro attended the event, along with several community partners, including Fernanda Carvalho, Director of Health and Human Services for Danbury; Indira Meza, Patient Experience and Community Partnerships Manager at CIFC; and Mallory Paige, a parent ambassador from the Office of Early Childhood. The Endless Sky is a new collection of songs that finds Brian doing what he does best, looking in all directions: up, down, outward, and inward. You’ll hear songs about being Open to Surprise, the deeper love of Moonlit Love, and the title quote: ‘The endless sky is where I point my arrow / I wonder just how far there is to go’, from I Wonder.
